Former Timmonsville police chief dies

Police Chief Michael Martin

Former Timmonsville Police Chief Michael Martin died Thursday morning at a Florence hospital following an illness, according to Timmonsville interim administrator Mary Bines.

Martin served with the town's police department for 20 years until his health failed in January. He was the police chief for much of that time.

"He will be missed. It saddened our hearts when he heard about his demise. I'm sure the citizens of Timmonsville will miss him dearly," said Bines.

Martin remained with the town even after the police department closed last May.

He worked with records and evidence.

Martin was regarded as someone who cared about the people of Timmonsville and did all he could to make it a better place to live for residents.

Martin's funeral will be held in the chapel of Layton Anderson funeral home located at 4210 West Palmetto Street in Florence on Sunday afternoon at 1:30.

Bines says flags will be lowered on that day.
