Former Timmonsville police chief dies

Timmonsville's first black police chief, Johnny E. Wright, passed away Thursday at a Florence hospital following a brief illness.

He served as Timmonsville Police Chief from 1981 through 1992.

Wright also was a Timmonsville town councilman for a number of years.

His funeral is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Methodist Church in Timmonsville.

Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery on Alligator Road in Florence.
