Former South Carolina Representative Jesse E. Hines, 80, passed away following an illness Sunday at a Columbia nursing care facility, according to Hines family.
The Democrat represented District 62 in Darlington and Florence counties in the SC House of Representatives for 14 years before he stepped down in 2006.
He's credited with doing a number of things to improve the quality of his community.
Hines received the Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest civilian honor in 2006.
He's also received awards from the SC House's Education and Public Works Committee.
Hines served in the US Army before establishing a career in education in Darlington County.
A memorial will be held at Bethany Baptist Church in Lamar Thursday at 5:30 p.m. His funeral will be held at Savannah Grove Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow at the Florence National Cemetery.
