Florence Regional Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for an expansion project.
The airport is expanding its concourse area, otherwise known at the departure lounge.
Just before 9/11, airport officials built a new concourse with two new gates. The 42 seat area didn't have restrooms or vending facilities, so travelers had to go back through security to use those facilities.
The new departure lounge will include restrooms and vending machines and will seat 250 people. It will have four gates.
Airport officials say it's five times as large as the old facility.
The expansion project cost about $7 million dollars and is 95 percent paid for through federal funds. The Pee Dee Regional Airport Authority will fund the difference.
Construction is expected to be complete by next September.
