Florence hazing suspects to appear in court

Update: Court records show charges were dismissed against Maurice Robinson on June 20,2014 in this incident.

Officials at the Florence County Magistrate Office say nine men charged with hazing are expected to appear before a circuit court judge Tuesday for their first initial court appearance.

Last month, deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office arrested Maurice Robinson, Kevin Cooper, Henry Watson, Miles Norton, Marcus Raven, Nicholas Washington, Jatravian Brown, Chappelle Smith and Uribe Norton.

They're each charged with one count of hazing which is a misdemeanor in South Carolina.

Deputies say the men are members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and three of the suspects are students at Francis Marion University in Florence.

They have been suspended from the university.

The alleged hazing incident happened off campus at a home on Rosemount Drive in Florence County.

The 22 year old victim is a student at FMU.

According to deputies, the men beat the student so bad they damaged his kidneys and he had to be hospitalized for eight days.

Officials at Florence School District One say one of the suspects, Maurice Robinson, is a science teacher at South Florence High School.

His booking report shows his address as the same address where deputies say the hazing happened.

District officials couldn't be reached for comment on Robinson's employment status.

The national organization suspended the Phi Beta Sigma Chapter at FMU.
