Florence County ordinance to consolidate fire districts passes

Florence County Council members voted 6-2 to consolidate six fire districts, Thursday.

Councilman Mitch Kirby and Councilman Willard Dorriety, Jr. voted against it.

The departments in each of the six districts will remain intact but essentially under the control of Florence County.

County leaders believe merging the districts into one has a number of advantages, including better management and financial accountability.

County council passed first reading on the ordinance last month and then held a series of public meetings.

After a public hearing Thursday morning, council members voted to pass the ordinance.
