Florence County Council votes to sue over separate fire district in West Florence

Florence County Council

Florence County Council voted Thursday morning to take legal action against the creation of a special fire district for the West Florence community.

The South Carolina General Assembly passed into law last month a bill for a separate fire district in West Florence and removed the area from Florence County's consolidated fire district.

The county's new district merged six fire districts.

West Florence residents didn't want to be a part of the consolidated district because it meant higher taxes for them.

County officials say their attorney is researching the law to determine what body of state government they will have to sue to stop the creation of a separate fire district in West Florence.

Council is hoping to know more in a few days and expect to have a lawsuit filed by as early as next week.
