Florence City Council takes first step to transfer land for FMU's new medical school

Florence City Council passed the first reading Monday of an ordinance to transfer the lot at the corner land of West Evans Street and Irby Street, commonly referred to as the site of the Trust Building, to Francis Marion University (FMU) for the construction of the new $15 million Health Sciences Facility.

It passed 6-0 with Ed Robinson abstaining.

Council is expected to pass the second reading on the ordinance next month which would finalize the deal.

The 97-year-old Trust Building is in the process of being demolished and is expected to be completely torn down in another two weeks.

Construction on FMU's medical school is scheduled to start this fall.

The medical school building will be three stories high and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.
