Florence attorney suspended from practicing law following arrest for sex crime

Joel Thomas Broome

The South Carolina Supreme Court placed Joel Thomas Broome on interim suspension Wednesday following his arrest on a charge of Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree two weeks ago.

Florence police say Broome sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman at a Florence apartment he was visiting on September 7th.

The woman was passed out when Broome undressed her and started having sex with her, Major Carlos Raines said.

When she woke up, she asked Broome to stop and he did, Raines added.

Broome's license to practice law in South Carolina is suspended until further ordered by the State Supreme Court.

Twelfth Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements says his office has recused itself from prosecuting this case because Broome is an attorney with whom they've dealt with professionally. The case will be handled by the SC Attorney General's Office.
