5 arrested in connection with inmate's escape from Marlboro County jail
MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) - Five people have been arrested in connection with helping a man after he escaped Sunday morning from the Marlboro County Detention Center, according to Marlboro County Sheriff Charles Lemon.
Cyril Kendrell Lowery, 28, charged in connection with a drug bust Friday at a Bennettsville home, escaped custody just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Investigator Trevor Murphy with the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office.
Lemon said Betty Norris, Anthony Norris, John Henry Norris, Kasey Norris and Brian Blackmon are all charged with harboring an escaped convict.
Kasey is also charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol.
Lemon said Lowery is friends with the Norris family.
Lemon added they think Lowery is hiding out between Marlboro and Dillon counties.
He said deputies in both counties, along with the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), are following all leads to track down Lowery.
Lemon said he's investigating to determine how Lowery managed to escape from the detention center.
He said if his investigation reveals carelessness on the part of detention center employees, they will be disciplined.
Murphy said deputies arrested Lowery last Friday and seized a large quantity of cocaine, crack and pills from his possession.
He said officers also seized five firearms and a large amount of money in connection with the bust.
The bust stemmed from an ongoing narcotics investigation in Marlboro County, according to Murphy.
Lowery was being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
