An early morning fire has destroyed a vacant house on Highway 15-401 just outside the town limits of Society Hill.
A passerby saw the fire around 5 Thursday morning and called 911.
The home was pretty much covered in flames when firefighters got to the scene, according to Captain Rickey Flowers with the Darlington County Fire District.
It was contained and under control within two hours, but officials still aren't sure what caused the home to burn.
"We're still trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Where and how it got started? If we find anything beyond that, we'll involve the Darlington County Sheriff's Office," said Captain Flowers.
The Darlington County Sheriff's Office helped with traffic control as crews worked to put out the fire.
Hartsville City Fire provided mutual aid.
