FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Fayetteville father has been charged after police say his 4-year-old son found a loaded gun in the home and shot and killed himself.
Police say 32-year-old Jeffery David Perez was arrested Saturday and charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to secure a firearm.
Authorities say Perez was home alone that morning watching the boy, Killian, and two other children while their mother was in Durham visiting a family member.
Investigators say the boy got the loaded handgun from on top of a refrigerator and shot himself.
Perez has been released from jail, and it wasn't known if he had an attorney. He is a soldier in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bragg.
