Duke Energy: SC coal ash ponds different from NC
Tue, 25 Mar 2014 02:23:55 GMT —
Duke Energy officials are assuring South Carolina regulators that neither of the utilities' coal ash ponds in the state have designs similar to a pond in North Carolina which dumped millions of gallons of contaminated water into a river.
George Everett told the Public Service Commission on Monday that storm water pipes do not run under its coal ash ponds in Anderson and Darlington counties. A break in a storm water pipe caused the massive leak into the Dan River near Eden. N.C.
Duke officials say they're in the process of taking extra safety measures at the ponds in South Carolina along with the three dozen similar ponds in North Carolina, but it could take years and they gave no specifics.
An environmental group plans a presentation later Monday afternoon.
