On Saturday, bus operators from across the state tested their skills in Myrtle Beach.
The 2014 Statewide Transit Bus Roadeo competition kicked off in the parking lot of the former Waccamaw Pottery Outlet Park. It's sponsored by the Transportation Association of South Carolina, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The competition includes a written test and skill demonstrations on a timed driving course designed to test every phase of driving that a bus operator encounters under normal driving situations. The course had obstacles to test a driver's ability to negotiate turns, passenger stops and judgment problems.
Bus Roadeo committee Chairperson Keith Moody explained that the competition helps build driver's confidence and improves both driver and passenger safety.
"Each team gets scored. What that property will get is the score for the maintenance, the score for their drivers, they then in turn can take that information back, educate their staff, their drivers, their maintenance team and take them to a whole new level," Moody explained.
Buses ranged in size from a van category to 40-foot buses.
More than 60 participants showed up to this year's event.
