Driver charged with felony DUI after wreck with bicyclist

Derron Aaron Gilchrist, 20, of Loris, has been charged with Felony Driving Under the Influence, resulting in a death, according to records from J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Gilchrist was driving north on Highway 45 early Saturday morning when he hit a man on a bicycle, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim was identified as Edward Whitis, 55, of the Loris area, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler.

Gilchrist, who Highway Patrol officials say was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after the crash, is currently being held at the detention center on a $25,000 bond.
