Dog and her five puppies euthanized after rabid raccoon attack

A dog and her five puppies had to be euthanized after they were bitten by a rabid raccoon in Robeson County.

County health officials say the mother dog was trying to protect her puppies when they encountered the raccoon on NC 41 in Lumberton last week.

The raccoon was killed and it tested positive for rabies.

Health officials say the dogs weren't vaccinated, so they had to be put down.

This is the 8th reported case of rabies in Robeson County this year.

Three weeks ago, a rabid fox attacked a woman. The woman is undergoing treatment for rabies.
