Residents found an eleven-foot long alligator on Academy Road in Bennettsville Friday afternoon.

They called 911 and deputies with the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office responded to secure the scene. They called in the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

The alligator was so big, a DNR officer could barely get it loaded onto his truck, according to Major William Poole, with DNR.

The alligator was released into a nearby pond, where DNR believes it was living.

DNR says whenever you see an alligator, don't approach it. Just call 911. Dispatchers will notify DNR officers who are trained on how to handle them.
