Officials with Dixie Cup, also known as Georgia Pacific, say they're laying off about 30 workers in the cup department of the plant.
They say the demand for paper cups from customers and consumers are down because of the economy.
Officials say there is a shift in the food industry from paper cups to plastic ones.
Plant officials notified employees of the layoffs Thursday evening. Those affected by the layoffs are waiting to learn if they can transfer to other departments in the plant.
Officials say it's also a possibility that the workers could be called back if demand increases again for paper cups.
Dixie Cup of Darlington employs 550 people.
