Dillon High School football player killed

Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley says a Dillon High School football player has been killed in a car accident.

Grimsley says James Wright David, Jr., 17, crashed around 2 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 57 South near the Fork community.

Grimsley says James, who was known as Jake to family and friends, ran off the road, over corrected and lost control.

He died from injuries suffered in the accident.

Tykel Madison, 19, was a passenger in the car. He was taken to McLeod Health in Dillon and is expected to be OK.

Jake was a senior at Dillon High School and played four years on the football team.

According to head coach Jackie Hayes, Jake picked his girlfriend up from work and was on his way home when he crashed.

The team is scheduled to play Timberland this Friday in the semi-finals of the state football playoffs. If Dillon wins this game, they will play in the state football championship game December 2nd.

Wednesday afternoon grief counselors will meet with Jake's teammates to help them cope with the loss.

They're still preparing for Friday's game, and some teammates say they'll dedicate the game to Jake.
