A Georgetown County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman with possible mental health issues, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were called to a residence on Ashcraft Circle in Litchfield Beach for a welfare check around 6:30 Saturday evening.
Sheriff's deputies were contacted by a family member concerned for the woman's well-being.
Upon arrival, deputies were told the woman was in a bathroom with a knife threatening to harm herself, according to GCSO.
A property manager let deputies into the residence, and they were in the process of clearing the area when the woman charged the deputies with a knife.
A sheriff's deputy responded with gunfire, killing the woman, according to GCSO,
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
