Around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Georgetown County sheriff's deputies responded to Apple Street in Andrews for a report of two dogs fighting.
When deputies arrived, they saw a crowd of ten children and two adults standing near two pit bulls attacking each other.
They moved the crowd back and attempted to use verbal commands to get the dogs to stop fighting. When that didn't work, sheriff's office spokesperson Carrie Cuthbertson says deputies used a Taser.
They say one dog stopped and was incapacitated. The other dog continued to attack despite several Taser stuns to its head.
Deputies shot and killed the dog in the interest of public safety, Cuthbertson said.
No one would claim the dead dog. The owner of the other pit bull told deputies they had been walking their dog when the second animal ran towards them.
Witnesses told deputies the attack had been ongoing for about 30 minutes before deputies were called.
