Deputies arrest standoff suspect after more than 17 hours

Officers in Marlboro County meet during a standoff with a high speed chase and murder suspect.

Marlboro County deputies arrested a man they say killed a woman, dropped a baby out of a car and led them on a chase.

It started about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the man dropped off Takeyia Esterling, 20, at Marlboro Park Hospital in Bennettsville where she died minutes later. Her relatives say she is the mother of the 7-month-old who was dropped from the car and the girlfriend of the suspect.

Deputies say the man then dropped the baby and led them on a 20-mile high speed chase that ended with the 17 hour 30 minute standoff. Deputies say the man parked the car in front of his mother's house on Union Street about 6 p.m. and that's where he spent the night.

Marlboro County Sheriff Fred Knight says they employed a strategy where they cornered the suspect and were able to arrest him without incident. Knight says now their job is to piece together the events of Wednesday afternoon. He's not yet releasing the suspect's name.

The baby is expected to be alright.
