UPDATED: Two people have died after a fire Easter Sunday morning at a multi-family building on Calhoun Drive in Garden City, according to J.R. Haney, assistant fire chief with Murrells Inlet - Garden City Fire Rescue.
The Horry County Coroner's Office has identified the woman who died as Melissa Lamb, 38, of Timmonsville and the man as Joel Lamb Jr., 48, of Timmonsville.
The preliminary cause of Melissa's death was asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation and Joel died from injuries sustained from a fall, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
Louanna Cromer, who lives down the street, said she woke up to the sound of explosions. "I looked out the window and just saw flames coming out the bottom of the home...I grabbed my phone and called 911."
Cromer was one of the first on scene in the early-morning chaos, trying to comfort those who were saved.
"The four individuals that came out were very distraught. They were crying and screaming obviously for some individuals that were still inside the home," Cromer explained.
Firefighters worked for hours and contained the fire to one side of the building. Investigators were also on scene, looking for any signs of a cause but so far, nothing has been released.
