Crews respond to fire at Lake City plastics plant

Around 12:11 p.m., firefighters with South Lynches Fire Department responded to the Nan Ya Plastics on Beulah Road in Lake City after a fire was reported at the facility.

The fire started in the insulation around an out of service machine on the 7th and 8th floors of the 10 story building, according to West Florence Fire Chief Anthony Fox.

Multiple fire units were called to the fire since there was a concern that toxins would be released but officials later said no toxins were released, Fox added.

Firefighters from Olanta, Howe Springs, Johnsonville, Hanna-Salem Firendfield, and Clarendon Counties all responded.

There was no structural damage to the involved building or to the manufacturing capabilities of Nan Ya Plastics.

Crews were also provided by Florence County EMS, Williamsburg County EMS, the Florence County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

There were no injuries to any firefighters or employees of Nan Ya Plastics.

The investigation continues into what caused the fire.
