Crews fight fire at tobacco farm

Horry County and Mullins fire crews are investigating a tobacco barn fire at Shelley Farms on Highway 917 near Nichols in Horry County, according to Brian VanAernem with HCFR.

The fire started just after 7:30 Thursday morning.

At one point, Van Aernem said there were "multiple exposures."

According to Assistant Chief Doug Cline with Horry County Fire Rescue, an individual tobacco barn used for curing tobacco caught fire.

Crews got the fire contained within an hour.

Firefighters remain on scene removing the tobacco racks from the barn as they are still smoldering, according to Cline.

The owner of the farm Johnny Shelley said he will be monitoring those tobacco racks for several days.

He said he lost 3,500 pounds of tobacco in the fire.

However, Shelley praised fire crews for their quick response saying "it could have been much worse."
