Crews battle fire at auto body shop

A fire destroyed Drigger's Auto Body Shop on Cheraw Highway in Bennettsville Thursday afternoon.

Bennettsville City Fire Chief Dixon Odom says two mechanics were welding a car when it caught fire.

Odom added the mechanics tried to put out the fire, but it got too dangerous for them. So they ran out of the shop and called 911.

Flames covered the entire back of the building when fire crews arrived. It took them two hours to get the fire contained and under control, Odom said.

At one point, the fire was so massive that city police shut down a portion of Cheraw Highway.

About 55 to 60 firefighters with Bennettsville City Clio Rural, Wallace Rural, McColl Rural Fire Departments responded to the fire.
