Crash victim dies despite efforts by Good Samaritans

A 21-year-old from Marlboro County
died after being rescued from an accident involving a tractor trailer and an SUV on Interstate 95 in Florence County.
Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identifies the victim as Donald Onaje Watson, Jr.
A Ford Explorer was traveling north on I-95 just before 8 a.m. Wednesday when the SUV went into the median, lost control, and crossed into the emergency lane, according to Corporal Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Explorer then hit the rear of a tractor trailer parked in the emergency lane, Collins said.
When firefighters arrived on scene they found Good Samaritans from a tree service performing CPR on Watson, according to Chief Anthony Fox with the West Florence Fire Department.
The three members of the tree service plus a member of the South Carolina Forestry Commission arrived on scene of the collision shortly after it occurred. They were able to get the trapped driver out of his SUV, which had caught fire, according to Fox.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by SCHP.
