Construction begins on sports facility at Myrtle Beach Convention Center

Hundreds of trees have been cleared out in an area right behind the Myrtle Beach Convention Center parking lot, making way for a large indoor sports facility.

The Myrtle Beach Convention Center is undergoing construction for a new facility that the general manager says will lure in thousands of people.

Hundreds of trees have been cleared out in an area right behind the Myrtle Beach Convention Center parking lot, making way for a large indoor sports facility.

The sports facility will provide eight basketball courts which can be turned into sixteen volleyball courts.

Other sports like wrestling, track and intramural leagues will also be held there.

"Sports tourism is the big ticket item right now This will put us right up there with the rest of them and the type of facilities and types of things that you can do in Myrtle Beach. We are really excited about it," said Paul Edwards, general manager of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Edwards says the indoor sports facility will be 100,000 square feet, and will cost $12.5 million to build.

The facility is expected to be completed in February of 2015.
