A mixed breed dog attacked an eight-year-old girl while she was walking at the corner of Church and Chestnut Streets in Cheraw Monday afternoon, according to Captain Keith Thomas with the Cheraw Police Department.
Thomas says the child was in a ditch and screaming when a 38-year-old woman heard the girl and ran to her aid.
The woman was able to get the dog off the child, but was bitten on the ankle and thigh.
The woman was taken to the hospital for her injuries. They're not considered life threatening Thomas says the child suffered superficial wounds and scratches and will be okay.
The dog ran away and officers are actively searching for the animal. Witnesses say it is a charcoal grey mixed breed, possibly with some bulldog in it. It was last seen near Chestnut Street and Liberty Street.
If you see the dog, police say do not approach it and call 9-1-1.
Keith says animal control has talked with the dog's owner in the past and advised him to better confine his animal. No word on if the owner will be charged in connection with the attacks.
