Chase ensues in Myrtle Beach after police say man blew off checkpoint

A police chase on New Year's Eve landed a Myrtle Beach man in the hospital.

State troopers were working a checkpoint at the Garden City Connector on New Year's Eve, according to Sgt. Jeff Benton with the Horry County Sheriff's Office.

Eric Maurice Jenkins, 36, was driving a Ford Ranger and refused to stop around 11:20 p.m., Benton said.

Troopers chased him through The Market Common in Myrtle Beach until he crossed over to Highway 17 Bypass.

They were able to stop his car when it crashed on Highway 707. Jenkins then took off on foot, but was caught a short time later.

Jenkins is in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and Benton says he's now listed in good condition.

Warrants have been obtained for his arrest by South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Charges are pending until he is released from the hospital.

The Horry County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
