Iconic Pawleys Island Chapel moved for repairs

Chapel on the move in Pawleys Island, (WPDE)

Pawleys Island Chapel is in need of some repairs. In order to do that, workers had to move the building itself.

Parts of Myrtle Avenue on Pawleys Island were shut down Friday.

Workers used machines to pick up the chapel and move it across the street to work on it.

The 70-year-old chapel needs a new foundation after it suffered damage from the recent hurricanes.

The chapel is an icon, Pawleys Island Mayor Jimmy Braswell said.

"When you come across these causeways one of the first things that you see is that chapel. Its such a big icon. I know when I come across and I know when a lot of our visitors come across, they look at that chapel and their stress level goes way down," the mayor said.

The goal is to have the chapel back up and running by the springtime for weddings.
