On Tuesday, the Georgetown County Council received a formal presentation explaining the Georgetown County New Business Center (GCNBC) and what it would do.
The GCNBC is designed as a business incubator, which is a relatively new business concept to our area. The ultimate goal is to start businesses, create jobs, and to give internship opportunities to local college students.
"Part of what an incubator does is to connect people with ideas and people that have resources to fund those ideas," said George Onufer, owner of AMATEC Inc.
The GCNBC offers affordable working space to small business start-ups, and includes mentoring, workshops, and networking opportunities.
Project coordinators said they have been working to develop this concept over the last few months.
The business incubator would be built on part of the Litchfield Exchange property, which has been vacant for some time.
"We have to believe that when the ideas prove out that the business will want to continue and locate in the county."
Onufer expects to have the GCNBC up-and-running in a few months.
