Boater sees possible distressed whale near Pawleys Island

A boater reported seeing a whale that appeared to be in distress near Midway Inlet between Litchfield Beach and Pawleys Island, according to Pawleys Island police.

The whale was about 100 yards off shore, according to Pawleys Island Police Chief Mike Fanning.

The boater could not say what type of whale it was or how big, Fanning said.

If the whale does wash up on shore, people should not approach it or make any attempt to save it. Contact the Pawleys Island Police Department, which will notify NOAA and Coastal Carolina University.
