Atlantic Beach no longer has police force
Atlantic Beach let go of their only two officers this past weekend leaving the town without a police force, according to mayor pro-tem Carolyn Cole.
Cole added that the previous town manager did not sign the officers up for insurance through the state and so it would be a risk to keep them.
"Mr. Blanton inherited a very tough situation and he is making some of the best decisions. We're using off-duty Horry County officers, the town of Atlantic Beach pays for that," Cole stated.
Cole says if you live in Atlantic Beach and are in need of police service, you are advised to call 911.
Atlantic Beach Police Chief Mike Bordner told NewsChannel 15 on Friday that he was let go by the town. Bordner says town manager Calvin Blanton told him the town could no longer afford to keep him on staff.
Bordner stated that he had been the only officer in the town for some time and Blanton told him Horry County police would help patrol the town.
Our calls to Calvin Blanton have not been returned.
