The American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region deployed a local Emergency Services Response Manager this morning to support rescue and relief operations in Colorado where the Red Cross is providing shelter, food, relief supplies and comfort to thousands of people forced from their homes by flash flooding.
"Our hearts go out to those being affected by flooding," said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region. "I am proud that our local disaster-trained volunteers are ready and willing to go to the affected areas to assist with relief efforts."
Dan Coto, Emergency Services Response Manger for the Palmetto SC Region, was deployed to Colorado to assist with the management of governmental relations as Red Cross is working closely with local emergency management officials and the Colorado National Guard to help ensure people get the help they need.
More than 400 trained disaster workers are staffing shelters and evacuation centers. More than a 500 people stayed in 14 shelters last night in Colorado. Working with community partners, the Red Cross has served more than 10,000 meals and snacks. The Red Cross has also mobilized more than 20 response vehicles and six truck loads of relief supplies.
Access to some communities is difficult due to flood waters and damaged roads. As flooded areas begin to re-open, the Red Cross will be there to assess the damage, distribute clean up supplies and support a recovery effort that will take weeks and months. The Red Cross is already planning for that effort now.
Flooding has also caused numerous evacuations in New Mexico and Texas and Red Cross workers are also helping people in those states, providing shelter, meals and comfort for those affected. The Red Cross is also supporting people affected by floods in Utah and Arizona.
People all across the flooded areas need your help now. The Red Cross has launched a large flood relief effort to help people in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. We need the continued support of the public to help those in need.
