Two cars ran over a six-foot-long alligator in the middle of the road on Highway 151 near Manheim Auto Auction in Darlington, according to city police.
Officers say the gator was probably coming from a wooded area near the highway.
Drivers called 911 after hitting the gator.
Police officers who responded said at first, the alligator was motionless, but then it made a sudden movement.
Officers with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) taped the alligator's mouth and took it away.
They say it had to be euthanized because of its injuries.
DNR says alligators tend to come out more following a heavy rain.
If you come across one, you're asked to not approach it, rather call 911.
Dispatchers will send DNR.
