Affordable Care Act open house held for Grand Strand residents

Healthcare representatives helped people navigate the process of signing up through the ACA website.

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce held an open house Tuesday, to help people who have yet to sign up for healthcare through the Affordable Care Act.

The federal deadline for the mandatory health insurance sign-ups is in one week, on March 31. The penalty for being uninsured by the deadline is a federal tax penalty of 1% of income, or a $95 fee, based on whichever charge is higher. The penalty will increase over several years.

The open house is providing education and enrollment assistance to individuals and businesses until 7:30 pm Tuesday at the Hilton Garden Inn at Coastal Grand Mall, 2383 Coastal Grand Circle, in Myrtle Beach.

Five independent BlueCross BlueShield agencies are there to answer questions, assist with determining eligibility for a federal subsidy, and enroll people in a policy that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act.

The agents represent health plans from BlueCross and from BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina.
