$85 million in unauthorized purchases earns VA Department Golden Hammer Award

The Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington spent more than $85 million on unauthorized purchases in fiscal years 2012 and 2013.

The Veteran's Affairs Inspector General's Office began investigating after getting complaints about financial waste and discovered the unauthorized purchases.

Since the start of 2013 the office has removed card purchasing privileges from more than 300 people.

The Department of Veteran's Affairs receives this week's Golden Hammer Award, a weekly award with investigative news partner The Washington Times that shines the spotlight on possible government waste and abuse of tax dollars.
