2 dead in small plane crash in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- Authorities say two men have died in the crash of a small plane at an airport in Mount Pleasant.

Charlene Gunnells of the Charleston County Aviation Authority says the crash happened about 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport east of Charleston.

The names of the victims have been released by the Charleston County Coroner's Office. The victims are Matt Gaither, 20, of Johns Island and flight instructor Graham Borland, 33, of North Charleston.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen in Atlanta says the single-engine Cessna 150 was taking off at the time of the accident. The plane crashed about 200 yards from the end of the runway in a swampy area.

Bergen said the FAA is investigating and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause.
