A warrant has been issued for a suspect wanted in connection with the murder of Daquan Stephens, 16, according to Fairmont Police Chief Danny Parker.
Stephens was shot to death at the Calvin Haggin Park on Linden Street in the Fairmont community of Robeson County, Friday evening.
According to witnesses, Stephens was on the court shooting basketball when a woman pulled up in a car with two men inside.
The men got out and walked up to Stephens. After a short conversation, several shots were fired at Stephens, according to Chief Parker.
Matthew Lassiter, an off duty Robeson County sheriff's deputy, was playing basketball in the same park.
He heard the shots and called 911. Lassiter then ran to Stephens and administered CPR until EMTs arrived.
Police are not releasing the name of the suspect they've identified in the warrant at this time. The warrant is for a charge of First Degree Murder. Parker says they have other persons of interest.
Parker says he doesn't believe people using the park are in danger, but Fairmont Police will increase patrols of the park.
Stephens was a sophomore at Fairmont High School.
