COLUMBIA, S.C. - About 100,000 utility customers have awoken to a fifth day without power in South Carolina.
Most of them lost power Wednesday or early Thursday when an ice storm swept across southern and eastern parts of the state. Power crews have been out since working 16-hour shifts to try to get the electricity back on.
Sunday morning, the state's 20 electric cooperatives, serving mostly rural areas, had 69,000 customers still without power. South Carolina Electric & Gas reported 22,700 outages and Duke Energy still had 8,400 customers without power. At the peak of the storm, about 350,000 customers lost power across the state.
Utility officials say it will be later this week before everyone gets power back.
Marion, Williamsburg, Aiken, Berkeley, Dorchester, Barnwell, Orangeburg and Bamberg counties remain the hardest hit.
