A Lowcountry preacher's act of kindness put him in harm's way Sunday.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says Pastor Sandy Wilson, Jr. of Saint Mary’s Holiness Church in Saint Stephen, saw a man trying to change a tire outside the church before service started Sunday.

When the pastor went outside to help the man, deputies say the man changing the tire threw Wilson to the ground, and tried to steal his wallet.

Others at the church saw what happened, and came to the pastor's aid, prompting the attacker to run away and try to flag down a ride on Highway 52.

BCSO deputies and St. Stephen Police responded to the scene, and a St. Stephen officer was able to detain the suspect nearby. Pastor Wilson and others from the church positively identified the man as the attacker.

The sheriff's office has arrested Hector Gibbs, Jr., 33, of Charleston, in connection to the incident. Gibbs will be charged with with attempted strong armed robbery and assault, online jail records show.

Gibbs is currently in the Hill Finklea Detention Center awaiting warrant service and a bond hearing.
