Evacuated home burned in Hilton Head
Hilton Head, S.C. (FOX 28 WTGS) —
A Hilton Head home that was evacuated ahead of Irma was heavily damaged by a fire on Sunday, according to a news release from Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue.
Crews responded to a fire in Sea Pines Plantation at around 1 p.m. and saw heavy fire and smoke showing from the single family home.
The fire started on the exterior of the home and spread to the inside, the release said. The fire appears to have originated near an outdoor food smoker.
"The occupants had evacuated for Hurricane Irma and were not home at the time of the fire," the release said.
Three engine companies, the truck company, three medic units and the Battalion Chief responded to the fire.
The fire was under control at 2:18 p.m.
On Monday, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue ceased emergency operations due to the conditions.
