Teen carjacking, shooting suspect to be tried as adult

A 14-year-old arrested in June for attempted murder, kidnapping, carjacking and armed robbery will be tried as an adult on those charges.

Family Court Judge Whylie Cladwell made the decision to waive Zireek Brooks up to circuit court as an adult Wednesday.

Police say Brooks asked a woman for a ride and when she let him in the car, they say he shot her in the head. She managed to get out of the car and call police. 15th Circuit Solicitor Greg Hembree says a bullet is still lodged in Danielle Delpercio's neck and doctors say it's a miracle she survived.

Police arrested Brooks after pulling him over in Delpercio's car shortly after the June 12th shooting.

Hembree says state law allows for juveniles charged with certain crimes to be handled as adults.
