Teen arrested in killing, neighbor reacts

NewsChannel 15 spoke with neighbors in the area where the killing happened.

Brittany Johnson is accused of killing 29-year-old Monica Burroughs in front of her children. Burroughs' neighbor said no one deserved to die like that.

Jeannie Bell Graham lives just a couple houses down from where Burroughs was shot to death.

Graham said, "She was laying on the porch. They did CPR on her, but I knew she was dead before they left for the hospital, because, I mean, she didn't respond."

It happened on June 24th on Bayside Avenue near the Huckabee Heights housing development. Graham says she heard a gun go off, got in her mobile wheelchair, and saw Burroughs lying there on the ground.

"She was a good girl, she didn't bother anybody," Graham said.

Police arrested 17-year-old Brittany Alexis Johnson in Darlington County Wednesday. Police say she will be charged with murder. The news of Johnson's arrest triggered this reaction from Monica Burroughs' neighbor.

"Thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus and, I mean it like I said it. I really do, because she was a good girl."

Burroughs' four children are with their grandmother. And a grandmother herself, Jeannie Bell Graham had this to say to her friend now faced with raising four more children.

"I'll do my best, even in this wheelchair," Graham said.

Graham is no stranger to heartache. Her son was murdered 22 years ago, and to this day and the killer has never been brought to justice. Graham said in the six years she's lived in that neighborhood, three people have been killed.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting of Monica Burroughs, although it's thought to have started as a dispute over a man.

Brittany Johnson will stay in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center Wednesday night and is expected to be formally charged with murder Thursday.

A bond hearing has not been set.
