SC police shoot, kill robbery, assault suspect

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Police in South Carolina have shot and killed a man who investigators say robbed a store, abducted and assaulted a woman.

Multiple media outlets reported the shooting happened near Summerville High School late Monday morning. Summerville Police Capt. Jon Rogers says the man pulled a handgun on two officers who approached him on the sidewalk in front of the school.

Officers shot the man several times. He was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston, where he died.

The Dorchester County coroner's office identified the man as 29-year-old Garrick Heckstall of Ridgeville.

Rogers says no students were hurt. The school was temporarily locked down as authorities investigated.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
