A person walking off of Kinlaw Drive in Laurinburg found human remains Wednesday evening, according to Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin Williams.
The person immediately called 911, and officers were dispatched to the scene.
Williams says at this point they aren't sure if the remains are those of a man or woman.
They will be sent to a state lab to be analyzed.
Williams says they've called in the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) to help in the investigation.
"The SBI will process the scene and collect evidence," said Williams.
Officers will be at the scene throughout the night until all the remains are collected.
Williams explained, "Securing area with officers overnight so that we can process and gather evidence on scene. We want to make sure our collection is thorough."
Williams expect to release more information Thursday.
