Owner of pawn shop killed in apparent robbery

One man is dead after being shot at a pawn shop in Atlantic Beach, and police are looking for a killer.

They say the crime appears to be a robbery gone bad.

Horry County coroner Robert Edge said he estimates the shooting happened around noon.

It was a customer of Thee Pawn Shoppe in Atlantic Beach who discovered the body of 37-year-old Thomas Lane Holcomb on the floor behind the counter.

Holcomb is one of the owners. He'd been shot. That customer went next door and called 911.

Todd Cooper, who is a delivery driver for the chinese restaurant next door, knew Holcomb very well. He said he saw Holcomb alone in the store earlier with his business partner's dog.

He left to make a delivery and was shock to find his friend had been killed by the time he got back. "He would just give you the shirt of his back, you know what I mean? He was just that type of person, a really good person," Cooper said.

Coroner Robert Edge says Holcomb's body is being autopsied at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
