One in custody for rape after social media meet-up

A Myrtle Beach man has been taken into custody after a woman told police he raped her at gunpoint after the two met at a local restaurant.

Warrants have been filed for charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, and Possession of a Weapon of during the Commission of a Felony against David James Welch, 19, of Myrtle Beach, according to Lt. Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach police.

Officers responded to the Burger King at 2391 Coastal Grand Circle in Myrtle Beach in reference to an armed robbery.

The victim told police that she went to the restaurant to meet a man that she had met on social media, Crosby said.

Crosby said the investigation revealed that the victim drove the man to the Town Square apartments where he pulled a gun on her, raped her and took her personal items before leaving the scene.

Welch is in custody at the Myrtle Beach Police Department Detention Center.
