Myrtle Beach police pay tribute to fallen officer

Wednesday night, friends and family of a Myrtle Beach police officer killed in the line of duty, will gather to remember him.

Eight years ago Monday, December 29th, Officer Joe McGarry was shot and killed by Luzenski Cottrell.

Myrtle Beach police held their annual memorial service Monday night at 5:30 at the Myrtle Beach Law Enforcement Complex on Oak Street.

McGarry was questioning Cottrell in a Myrtle Beach Dunkin' Doughnuts parking lot, when Cottrell shot him in the face.

Cottrell was convicted in the Spring of 2005 and sentenced to death.

He's since appealed that sentence. He is currently serving a different life sentence for a Marion County murder.
